Lets just call this one a cross town rival:

Groupons Andrew Mason: ‘I was fired’

Andrew Masons Letter of resignation and Groupons biggest mistake.

Here is the text: “People of Groupon, “After four and a half intense and wonderful years as CEO of Groupon, I’ve decided that I’d like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding – I was fired today. If you’re wondering why . . . you haven’t been paying attention. From controversial metrics in our S1 to our material weakness to two quarters of missing our own expectations and a stock price that’s hovering around one quarter of our listing price, the events of the last year and a half speak for themselves. As CEO, I am accountable. “You are doing amazing things at Groupon, and you deserve the outside world to give you a second chance. I’m getting in the way of that. A fresh CEO earns you that chance. The board is aligned behind the strategy we’ve shared over the last few months, and I’ve never seen you working together more effectively as a global company – it’s time to give Groupon a relief valve from the public noise. “For those who are concerned about me, please don’t be – I love Groupon, and I’m terribly proud of what we’ve created. I’m OK with having failed at this part of the journey. If Groupon was Battletoads, it would be like I made it all the way to the Terra Tubes without dying on my first ever play through. I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to take the company this far with all of you. I’ll now take some time to decompress (FYI I’m looking for a good fat camp to lose my Groupon 40, if anyone has a suggestion), and then maybe I’ll figure out how to channel this experience into something productive. “If there’s one piece of wisdom that this simple pilgrim would like to impart upon you: have the courage to start with the customer. My biggest regrets are the moments that I let a lack of data override my intuition on what’s best for our customers. This leadership change gives you some breathing room to break bad habits and deliver sustainable customer happiness – don’t waste the opportunity! “I will miss you terribly. Love, Andrew”

Groupons Joe Young: ‘I was fired’

Here is the text: “People of Groupon, “After 3 wonderful years as your top promotor, I’ve decided that I’d like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding – I politely stepped away from you on Feb 15th. If you’re wondering why . . .  the events of the last year and a half speak for themselves. As CEO of several yoga studios, I am accountable. “Groupon you are out of control and are allowing headlines to speak for you. What you need to do is get back to the core principles, remember where you came from and who helped you get there. The board is aligned behind the strategy you shared over the last few months, and I’ve never seen you working together so effectively defective. It is time to give Groupon a wakeup call away from the public noise. “For those who are concerned about me, please don’t be – I love Groupon, and I’m terribly proud of what Andrew Mason had created. While his ideas were not always perfect he had the right idea.  Groupon needed a fresh team,  not a fresh leader. The man built Rome and now you expect him to do all the upkeep, chaotic yes but that was a prosperous time and things got done. This was a time Groupon had complete control of the situation, while it did not look that way to the outside world, you gained control thru chaois. All im saying is let the animals concentrate on the chaos and let the bees get to work. It did not take Groupon long for Andrews successors to make it just another corporate tool ie South Korea. Groupons biggest mistakes are listening to public outcry while they should have been moving forward as the leader entertained the audience, now look at them. I’m OK with having failed at this part of the journey. If Groupon was a Yoga Series, it would be like I made it all the way to master level without falling my first ever run through. I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to take the company this far in such boredom.  I’ll now take some time to get back to the core of marketing that Andrew Mason had inspired in me. Perhaps this will remind Groupon how marketing is done and figure out how to channel this experience into something productive. “If there’s one piece of wisdom that this simple pilgrim would like to impart upon you: have the courage to stand up for yourself and your leaders. Unfortunately for Groupon again its biggest regrets must be the moments that they allowed a few loud people to override intuition on what’s best for Groupon. After that your stockholders will be swallowing the whole thing. This 2nd round of leadership change gives you some breathing room to break bad habits and deliver sustainable services while pleasing merchants. The smiles on the merchants face will put Walt out of a job.  Don’t waste the opportunity! “I will miss you terribly. Love, Joe Young”

Side Note to Andrew Mason:

Take off the hoodie and suit up gorilla style. They have danced long enough.

be well,

Joe Young
